1.14 Configure and verify IPv6 Stateless Address Auto Configuration

Good Morning! At this very early in the morning, I am thinking of IPv6. This stateless address auto configuration of IPv6 refers to a method that doesn’t require the host to be aware of the present STATE so as to be assigned an IP address by the DHCP server. In other words, once we enable IPv6 on a Cisco Device, all hosts connected to this device will get  a Ipv6 Address without getting a DHCP server or without getting into the concept of DHCP.

1.) No need of DHCP server and Cost-effective —> I’ve mention this awhile ago and yup!, we can also save bucks

2.)No need for manual configuration- I cannot remember if DHCP configuration has already been discussed though it is also easy to configure DHCP but it would be better if we don’t configure at all because it may lead to human error

3.) Fast & Secure – This is in relation to #2. Since there’s no need for manual configuration then we will be having fast and secured configuration of IPv6.

How it works?

Step 1- Link-Local Address Generation

–> Once Ipv6 has been enabled, link local address will be generated with the following format:

11111110 10 + 54 zeroes + 64-bit interface

Just always remember that Link-Local address has a network prefix of FE80::/10 and so the first 4 bits represent F and the next 4 bits represent E and the next 16 bits represent 8 and 0 and so on.

Step 2 Link-Local Address Uniqueness test- very self explanatory. The networked device will ensure that he has a unique link-local address thus, no other device is using this address

Step3  Assignment of Link local address to interface- Just need to take note that link-local address once assigned to the interface, will be usable only to the local network and not routable to internet

Step 4 The new host will send “router advertisement” to the local router to determine the next process for autoconfiguration

Step 5 The node of host will receive specific directions from router for the process in the auto configuration process.

Step 6 Global address Configuration- There will be automatic configuration of Global address by the host.

How to configure?

How ironic could it be that we are telling that we don’ t need manual configuration for this but the title is Configure and verify IPv6 Stateless Address Auto Configuration. We mean to say we don’t need manual configuration means we don’t need to perform all configurations for each host or devices. We just need to touch our router with the following configuration:

configure terminal
interface fastethernet 1/0
ipv6 address autoconfiguration

How to verify?

Verify always required the show commands

use; “show ipv6 interface fastEthernet 1/0”

See you!
