1.5 Collapsed core and three-tier architecture comparison

I tried to deal with the 1.3b , c and 1.4 and it seems like I am not the best person to do write-ups with those and if I will do more research and I cannot absorb the information as fast as I could do with some topics. Well, it’s time to move on with the hierarchy of cisco devices;


The three tiers switches are core, distribution and access layer. By the way, what is the purpose of having hierarchy? Can we still design a network model without knowing these? Yes, but then because large networks can be extremely complicated, with multiple protocols and diverse technologies, Cisco has developed hierarchy model to help us design, implement, and maintain a scalable, reliable and cost-effective network

ACCESS LAYER- controls user and workgroup access to the resources on the network. To make it simple it allows end user device to have access in the network. Most devices used are specifically cisco 2950-3750 switches that use fast ethernet cable.

DISTRIBUTION LAYER –  it serves as the mediator between core and access layer. its primary functions are routing, filtering and WAN access and to determine how packets can access the core.Most switch models used are 3500 – 4500 switch.

CORE LAYER- This layer refers as the network backbone and the most responsible on transporting huge amount of traffic. This layer is composed of 6500 – 6800 Cisco catalyst model that uses gigabit ethernet so it must be fast because it aggregates all the traffic from all the distribution devices.


COLLAPSED/ TWO-TIER DEVICE- For network cost efficiency, there is what we called collapsed device. It is a device wherein the functions of core and distribution layers are implemented by a single device. The objective of this collapsed core is to reduce network cost and at the same time, to maintain the network efficiency.
